The Canada Savings Bonds & Premium Bonds Beginning

Canada Savings Bonds were first introduced in Canada during the First and Second World Wars. The bonds were originally known as War Savings Certificates and Victory Bonds and the funds were used to fund the war efforts. In 1946, Canada Savings Bonds were officially launched and the bonds were introduced as a part of Canada’s financing program at the time.

Canada Savings Bonds are available in both regular and compound interest pay methods.

In 1998, Canada Premium Bonds were introduced and provide many of the same features as the regular Canada Savings Bonds, but with a slightly higher interest rate because the bond is only cashable once a year.

Canada Savings Bonds and Canada Premium Bonds are only available for sale 2 months of the year. The bonds used to be extremely popular, however with low interest rates; many investors began to look for better investment alternatives.
